Stem Cell Therapy Q & A

What is stem cell therapy?

Stem cell therapy uses the power of cells that you make in your body to repair tissues.

Stem cells are the key cells to help signal and coordinate your body’s healing response. In addition, stem cells are powerful natural anti-inflammatories and also can turn into other cells to help heal damaged tissues. Your body keeps stores of them, but as you age, the levels of stem cells in your body fall.

When you have an injury, your repair systems might not have access to enough stem cells to repair the damage. This can also happen if you have a severe injury.

The Regenexx system harvests stem cells from areas where you still have high volumes, like your bone marrow and fatty tissues. Dr. Loch then injects a concentrated solution of these stem cells back into your body in the painful area.

Stem cell therapies, especially the Regenexx patented stem cell procedures, are one of the most effective forms of regenerative medicine.

What can stem cell therapy treat?

Dr. Loch has great success in treating a wide variety of musculoskeletal disorders and injuries with stem cell therapy, including:

  • Rotator cuff tears
  • Osteoarthritis
  • ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) tears
  • Tendinitis
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Meniscal tears
  • Annular tears (disc tears)

Using stem cell therapy could, therefore, prevent the risks and potential complications of surgery and the associated prolonged recovery period.

What happens when I have stem cell therapy?

Atlantic Regenerative Joint and Spine Center uses the Regenexx stem cell protocol. This is a same-day procedure as Dr. Loch collects your stem cells and reinjects them in one day.

However, in most cases, you need to undergo a series of regenerative medicine injections over three days to achieve the optimal benefits from stem cell therapy.

Day one

Your first visit to Atlantic Regenerative Joint and Spine Center is for a “preinjection” of a solution of hypertonic dextrose. This process is called prolotherapy, and it helps to cause mild inflammation that aids healing. Prolotherapy takes 30-40 minutes.

Day two

To harvest your stem cells, Dr. Loch takes bone marrow from your hip bones. He does this in a process known as bone marrow aspiration. The procedure takes place after you receive plenty of local anesthetics (numbing medicine), and in some cases, a sedative to keep you relaxed.

Dr. Loch then uses image-guidance technology to locate the bone marrow and remove it using a small needle. Using the proper technique, this procedure should not cause more than mild discomfort.

While the Regenexx lab technician processes the bone marrow aspirate to harvest your stem cells, you get a break for lunch before the reinjection process.

Reinjection happens after three hours, or possibly up to eight hours after the bone marrow aspiration. It takes between 60 and 80 minutes.

Day three

On the third day, you receive another injection, this time of SCP, which is a super-concentrated type of PRP (platelet-rich plasma). SCP comes from your blood and contains growth factors that boost healing.

You should begin to feel the effects of your stem cell therapy after about four weeks, but in some cases, it may take several months. Improvement continues over the following months, with optimal effects achieved after 6-12 months.
